In a way I grew into the two professions I have. My qualification for translator/interpreter in English and being a journalist can easily be explained: I came to like the British and happened to find that writing about people and events can be fun. It became also evident that I was more curious than I would like to admit. To me curiosity is the driver of my being a journalist. I still learn and am willing to learn from people, whom I meet in my work.
Being curious lead to more than journalism. I wanted to know more and more about the country I visited in 1970 for the first time: Great Britain. It happened with the guy in the pic, who took me with him on our honeymoon. In a way, it felt as if I came home. The result was that I became a certified anglophile in 1978. There have been times in which I could imagine to be a London based correspondent for the dailies I use to contribute to The reality is different, but I am quite happy with it. Today, I am a Rotterdam based correspondent for British publications and, on occasions, British television companies use my local knowledge. I have contributed to the program 'This Week' of Thames Television and to ITN. Scottish Television has used my services as well. It is clear: curiosity can lead to anything.
