The port press club Kyoto was started in 1956 on board the Swedisch merchant ship Kyoto, which was moored in Rotterdam. This being the case, the club of shipping correspondents and specialized journalists in economic affairs can be considered as one of the oldest press clubs in the Netherlands. The members work with various (international) media: dailies and weeklies, special interest papers, and press agencies. They report about port- and port related activities, shipping, logistics and transport.
 Every month a leading representative of one of the sectors within the logistic chain is invited to give his (or her) view on the market and/or on port affairs. In January of each year, the so-called Havenman van het Jaar (Man of the Port) is appointed by Kyoto-members. They grant this 'award' to the person who has proven to be innovative in his line of business, and is of major importance to the Rotterdam port.

Kyoto has appointed two members of merit. They are Wim de Regt and Bram Oosterwijk, who have been on board (and on the board of the press club) for tens of years. They are the first having been decorated with the gold Kyoto pin. Koos de Gast is Kyoto's chairman of honour.
 

The Men of the Port have established what is called a Council of Men of the Port as an advisory board in port affairs. They are very aware of the fact that this council should have added value, and not another group of 'wise men' giving advise. That is why they put the whole affair to rest, but not entirely. It will spring to life when it is called for.
